We are the archives of the University of Winnipeg and its founding colleges dating back to 1871.
Today marks the end of the Fall 2025 term!

Its important to prepare for exams and finish any final projects, but remember to take a well deserved break afterward. Although, its too cold to relax on the campus lawn like these 1931 students after their exams.

The store's 15 acres of retail space housed goods like hardware, sporting, electrical, and groceries. It had a light tower on the roof as a navigation beacon for airmail services. The building modernized over the years; in 1954 its service station was transformed into Western Canada's first parkade.

Opening on Nov. 18, 1926, the Hudson's Bay building in downtown Winnipeg is an enduring landmark in the city. Designed by architect Ernest Isbell Barott as a flagship department store, it was built to compete with the T. Eaton's department store (demolished in 2002).

Originally marking the anniversary of the 1918 that ended the First World War, Remembrance Day now remembers those who died in military service, and honour those who served in wartime. In WW1, UW's preceding colleges were one of many communities affected as students and faculty served in the war.

To stop pests entering collections we do three things. Clean to reduce food and shelter, use environmental controls to make the space inhospitable, and quarantine donations to prevent new pests.

Pests need three things to establish themselves; shelter, environment, and food. In archives your collection can be the food. Animal glues, parchment, wood, and textiles can be directly eaten and damaged.

Insect pests are one of the biggest dangers to archival collections, especially paper records. Common pests archivists watch out for include silverfish, book-lice, carpet beetles, and clothes moths among others.

Happy Halloween!

A favourite holiday photo in our collection is of Henry Duckworth and a young class ready for trick-or-treating. He was UW's 2nd president (1971-1981) and is known for contributions to physics and university education. The Duckworth Centre, opened in 1984, is named after him.

Archival digitizing is about both capturing a record as well as maintaining its legitimacy as a historical record. The process of digitization should documented and auditable in addition to producing a high quality digital record.

Digitization is an important tool in ensuring archival records remain accessible, but its complicated work!

Its more than a simple scan; involving assessment, digitization, metadata compilation, quality assurance, and the ongoing storage and maintenance of digital records.

In response, the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) formed an ad-hoc committee and released a report in 1959 that concluded Crowe's firing was unjust and violated academic tenure. Since the Crowe Case, CAUT has continually maintained an Academic Freedom and Tenure Committee.

An essential part for any donation to an archives is a deed of gift signed by the donor and the University. It transfers the ownership to the Archives so that staff can better manage and share the records, but also establishes any usage limitations or restrictions placed by the donor.

An important part of archival work is ensuring that historical records, regardless of format, remain safe so they can be accessed far into the future. This includes keeping them secured from theft, but also safe from the risks of environmental factors like pests or high humidity and temperature.
October 3, 2025 at 4:05 PM
While we collect many archival records, we also have some unique and unusual artifacts preserved! This includes artifacts from UW's sports teams, the Wesmen. Highlighted from their collection is a light-box sign from 2001, as well as a 1963-1964 jacket from alumnus and Basketball player Bob Law.
