And of course they are making billions in profit still by expanding production of fossil fuels in the North far faster than the south still. Thats likely a good part of the reason we see so many developing countries at the forefront of the fossil fuel phase out conversation.

📉 The other divide between the global north/south is that the north is pushing for FF phase out as national policy, technocratic or markets issue which ignores equity and justice - likely bc the know a managed decline with equity at its core means the have less room to continue production.

💸 I am increasingly convinced that climate action is going to come down to trade and debt. Tariffs and trade deals will be the currency of action in the future and if we don’t deal with debt we will end up on a much worse pathway.

🤥 The myth that gas is a transition fuel is alive and well despite all the evidence to the contrary and a shocking number of people here think phasing out coal means the are on the right side of the fossil fuel phase out even if they are building new LNG and gas infrastructure.

In response, the EU has tabled a weaker "Just Transition Action Plan" (JTAP), which developing countries see as an attempt to create a "talking shop" with no new financial commitments.

💥There is a widening gulf between what the global north and the global south see as solutions to the climate crisis. Best example of this is the G77 and China have formally proposed the Belém Action Mechanism (BAM), a new, funded body to manage a global just transition.
