A lovely apsidal east end. Such a simple building. I always go to visit John and Jane, baby twins of the mine manager buried next to the west wall.

A short visit to Wythburn Church today when passing. A gem on the edge of Thirlmere, being above the waterline when the valley was flooded to create the reservoir. Burial place of many miners who worked the lead mines on the shoulders of Helvellyn, together with their families.

St Kentigern’s Church, Caldbeck, a lovely Norman church with many medieval additions and a leper’s window. It’s the burial place of John Peel, the renowned huntsman.

St Michael’s and All Angels, Torpenhow, a beautiful Norman church virtually untouched by Victorian alterations. It has a remarkable painted wooden ceiling installed in1689 which is completely secular in origin.

Just received these lovely hand painted signs from @raypurvis.bsky.social which he makes to support conservation on Hadrian’s Wall Path. Thank you so much Ray. You know Heavenfield is one of my favourite places. 😍

Couldn’t resist calling in at Shap Abbey with its huge tower, nestled by the River Lowther. Founded in the 13th century by the Premonstratensian canons, many worked as priests in the local communities.

Day 23 A dry day and the last digging. Tapes and drawing boards out while yet more graves appear and are uncovered. The last skeleton lifted and there’s a great effort to bottom the ditch. Day ends with a big clean so all’s ready to model. An immense effort.
