And usually the person who is passionate about their work (and it doesn't need to be the work they're applying for) doesn't have the same on-paper qualifications as the other applicants. Care about something more than the job itself and share it. People pick up more on energy than on merits.

Sincerity and passion. I've been in a couple search committees and present for several applicant presentations, and the common theme among those who wind up hired is someone who can speak with zeal. It doesn't need to be the whole time, but it needs to come out in the cover letter, in the interview.
