I don’t know, 1999 was a long time ago. And I tend to remember Ian McEwan novels for their atmosphere more than plot. The Innocent was great, a psychological thriller set in Berlin during the Cold War. Spare, taut writing. Good spy story, too!

Missed it again #BlueBrewBooks
but enjoying a late-morning ☕️ & seeing what people are reading📚 Can’t remember if I actually read Amsterdam. I may be confusing it with Netherland by Joseph O’Neill (Manhattan as seen through the eyes of a Dutch banker befriended by a cricket player from Trinidad).🤷‍♀️

Yes, I marked Orbital as ‘Want to Read’ last year. And Flesh this year. So many books, so little time.🤣📚💟 #BlueCrewBooks

It’s pretty intense, alright! I’m surprised it won the Booker. But then the Booker has gone off the rails. Used to be such a good predictor of really great writers if not books! I haven’t liked any prizewinners lately. I’m reading Demon Copperhead, & admiring it more than liking it. #bluebrewbooks

Morning, Susan! Hope you had a good Thanksgiving🦃 Speaking of food, I’d say The Vegetarian made me squeamish. While I felt sorry for her, the way the story was told (3 perspectives) had a distancing effect… To me, the most interesting thing about the book was the glimpse into modern Korean society.

Good luck with Lessons in Chemistry, one of my “dnf” books from last year. Billed as laugh-out-loud funny, but more like laughable if you ask me. A brilliant chemist who’s clueless yet prone to lecturing everyone with 20/20 hindsight even tho’ this is supposed to be the 1950s… Anyway, safe travels!🛩️
