I was deeply disappointed by the lack of nature/science/climate/enviro on many major end-of-year book lists—so I decided to make my own!

As a species, we have a checkered history. Mistakes to heal, so much to learn. But on this Advent Eve, with dozens of neighbors and visitors gathering in the pure joy of watching a sunset's beauty, I find my soul bubbling over with hope.

There's a lot to be said for us human beings, there truly is.

Why we aren't fluent in crow when we've heard them talking around us our entire lives is a mystery to me.

It seems to me that the time is ripe for a Bluesky thread about how—and maybe even why—to befriend crows.

To say: my profile pic is a LiDAR image showing the river-ghosts—historical meanders—of the Lower Mississippi.
Water, wandering, wilfully.
It’s by Daniel Coe, who has deep-mapped the pasts of many rivers.

Huddled around a circle of light in a vast darkness, tending the fire through the long night. Ancient potsherds underfoot, a river carving thru geologic time—all a reminder that this moment is just a breath of the earth. That the darkness will pass, & our job is to build our small fires & tend them

Good news for once!

We’ve found a 300-year-old coral that’s so big it’s visible from space. It’s now considered the world’s largest. Best of all: it’s not yet harmed by climate change & global warming.

It’s being called a beacon of hope. Let it also be a call to action! #DoSomething 🧵

This lone Red-footed Booby hung out in Washington State for more than three months, until just recently. How did he get here, almost 4000 miles from his likely home in the South Pacific? Even more interestingly: why?

I'm working on an essay about his story. Stay tuned!
