In my experience, huge increase in knowledge from yr 3 to 4 to 5, especially from PhD students coming straight from undergrad. Lots of conflating issues in the US like yr 1 rotations, requiring a pub, and PIs hanging on to trainees for too long, but 3 years postbac does not seem like enough to me.

I think you answered your own question. You do it because you love it. Because you were born to do this. Because there's nothing better than sifting through your data, and thinking about ways to make it better next time. Because that joy doesn't depend on other people; it comes from within.
