How to get me to not watch your movie.

You’ve been kidnapped. The characters from the last TV show you watched are trying to rescue you. Who’s coming to save you?

And remember in a couple years who stands beside them. On the left in the photo are Seattle City Councilmembers Joy Hollingsworth and Bob Kettle.

Well, Girmay Zahilay's already on the top end of the disappointment scale. He's appointed Joy Hollingsworth to be on his transition committee, despite her votes to increase mass police surveillance and create SOAP/SODA, and trying to repeal the minimum wage. Also: Lisa "Seattle is Dying" Daugaard.

Corrected a long-standing oversight last night, and boy, does Colin Stinton have the imperious asshole type rather down pat.

2. MADS: Nice trick! French young adults snort wet drugs, which one should never do. Stunning filmmaking, and the highlight is first-timer Laurie Pavy who gives one of the best horror performances I have ever seen.

3. PROMETHEUS: Maybe my favorite *** movie? It's either the first or this one, and while the former has setting and skill on its side, this one has the brainy heft. Can't help but love the gnostic vibes, and it looks so damn gorgeous.

4. CURE: Given my general antipathy towards SEVEN, it surprised me how much I adored this since it mines similar territory. It's haunting and thrilling and bleak and it's not the only Kiyoshi Kurosawa film on this list.

5. DANS MA PEAU/IN MY SKIN: A tour de force from actor/writer/director Marina de Van about a woman getting in touch with herself. This is startling and horrifying and horrifyingly relatable.

6. I AM A GHOST: Avant-garde ghost story with a uniquely filmed take on haunting. Quiet, deliberate, and contemplative. I loved this a lot.

This is a little more gothic and experimental that Soderbergh's entry, so it just pips it on this list.

7. PRESENCE: Avant-garde ghost story with a uniquely filmed take on haunting. Quiet, deliberate, and contemplative. I loved this a lot.

8. LONGLEGS: Only cursorily like SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. Hits a pitch perfect tone of dusky surrealism, and it only took me a few days to recognize Maika Monroe, who I now realize could carry anything if she was asked to.

9. KURONEKO: Understands the assignment of featuring cats in a revenge film. Again a tale of political misogyny, but trades no. 10's cold realism for gossamer ethereality.
October 29, 2025 at 3:06 PM
10. HOLY SPIDER: Dry, clinical journalist tracks down serial killer story - not a bad thing! (see: Fincher, et al.) - but setting this in a political theocracy underlines the proceedings in triplicate. A+ performances from Amir Ebrahimi and Bajestani.

Top 10 Horror First Watches of the past year! HMs thru 8 today, rest 30-31.

Honorable mentions:
THE BORDERLANDS: Trad found footage boosted by surprisingly empathetic leads and a great final third.
[REC]: Ditto, but singular.
SINNERS: Obv.
DELLAMORTE DELLAMORE: Still isn't a Soavi I don't love.

My first official* goal of #FM26: Dahlien scoring off a Biyendolo assist in a friendly against the Dash. Nice reward for dealing with all the mishegoss with the menus! *(And a crashed game with Mondésir being the first scorer. It's a beta!)
