It’s the first indication the prisoner gives that he’s alive at all. “They’re gonna miss the show!” His drooping head comes up. One of the men behind Bruce swears. The only image of him the press ever saw was a blurry security camera photo. Until then, he was careful not to show his face, but this one looked intentional. His smile made that all too clear—or so Bruce had assumed. The papers reported that he wore makeup. Up close, Bruce can see that he does not. “Besides,” he says, enunciating his words with the practice of a lifetime of a mouth that doesn’t quite move right, “wouldn’t want you two to get too handsy.” It’s the first time Bruce really hears his voice—not in the scuffle of arrest and shouting over the November wind. He sounds young. He sounds coy. His gaze, cool and blue, takes hold of Bruce. “Especially you.” His giggle is so childlike that it’s repulsive. It’s the sound of innocence, and here, it’s obscene. There may be a permanent and grotesque smile on his face, but his eyes—eyes that look decades too young for the bags underneath them—twinkle with a real one.

"If I g-g-got luh-lost in the Hainesville Woods and Eh-Eddie was with me, I wouldn't wuh-hurry a bit," Bill told Richie. "He just nuh-nuh-knows. My d-d-dad says some people, ih-hit's l-like they got a cuh-huh-hopass in their heads. Eddie's l-l-like that."
