The article outlines specific benchmarking variables that can already be used to improve predictions of forest responses to environmental change. As well as data very much needed.

In short: The models could capture all the key features of forest development but would benefit from broader calibration of tree growth and mortality rates. We also need to look more closely at postdisturbance establishment.
