Much as I love Ant haven’t we been here before with Universal Credit and Andrew Lansley’s NHS reforms? I would be very cautious about throwing the whole system in the air when ministers already have many of the legal tools to add certainty anyway.

Mark Mazower’s Salonica, City of Ghosts, is the best history of a city I’ve ever read and a brilliant contextualisation of the Ottoman/Greek history being discussed today as well as the tragedy of the Sephardim and the holocaust.

There were just over 90,000 Irish born people in the county of London (the Middlesex figure doesn’t include inner south London) in 1871. Had peaked at 110,000 in 1851. Assume it also doesn’t include the County Boroughs of East and West Ham which were in Essex.

Indeed. The list of top 10 surnames in Jamaica is basically ‘a Scotsman, a Welshman and an Englishman went to Jamaica…….and ran slave plantations’
