I think this is the realm of the dangerous populists, demogogues, morally bankrupt self-enrichers and sociopaths and I *100%* think Vance and Trump belong to that group, and I think it’s SUBSTANTIALLY worse than the other two categories.

… would rather attack the media and the questioner, accuse them of bias, and will never ever admit it or correct themselves at any cost. These are I think the scary ones, because they’re quite comfortable doing completely immoral things and have no shame whatsoever.

… the press and media are important to keep them honest. And then I think there are people like Trump or Vance who absolutely does not give a shit about completely misrepresenting things or simply making stuff up, doesn’t see that as in any way disqualifying or wrong, and if confronted about it…

… I think this is reasonably common in politics and you might even say is the most common default position for a lot of politicians who - let’s be clear - are rewarded more for looking confident and being clear than they are for being strictly accurate. I think this is the place where…

Okay, I don’t actually think this is right. I genuinely do think there are gradations here. I don’t think there are *any* politicians who are *able* to say precisely what they think on a daily basis or don’t speak in potentially misleading ways, but I think a lot of that is caution…

My feeling is it’s a journalistic / editing error that was wrong and they should correct, but it in no way misrepresented the gist of what happened on the day. So a real mistake they should correct, but not a misrepresentation of Trump’s goals or the event that followed.

It’s a LITTLE more complicated than that but not much. They took two half sentences from different parts of his speech and stuck them together in a way they were never said. Thats clearly not great.

On the other hand, they used that clip to say he was inciting violence and he was, so /shrug

Really good question. My honest take:
(1) Their side of the aisle is obsessed with conspiracy theories and suspicious of any expert and so they’ll lean in that direction regardless
(2) It gives the illusion of doing something to protect people without their being any costs associated with it
