Three sites were in the Central Basin, extending north from Cleveland toward Canada. In all three instances, the volume of plastic per square kilometer increased. The area nearest to Cleveland roughly doubled to 98,000 particles per square kilometer. Further out, the numbers tallied at 92,000, up from 38,000. At the site nearest to Canada, the volume totaled 188,000 particles, up from 16,000. Closer to Buffalo, the increases were even more dramatic. Mason retrieved more than 700,000 particles per square kilometer off the Pennsylvania coast, compared with 19,000 in 2014. And in waters off Long Point, Canada, the numbers exceeded 500,000, up from 9,500. It makes sense that the numbers were higher in the eastern portion of the lake as the current flows in that direction, she said.

In a statement, Beach said that partnering with Novatek would “strongly benefit any company committed to advancing American energy leadership,” and that his company, America First Global, “actively seeks investment opportunities that strengthen American interests around the world.” He said he “has never worked with Steve Witkoff” but is “extremely grateful” for the efforts Witkoff and others are making to end the war in Ukraine. Trump Jr. has told people he isn’t doing business with Beach.

Burma is governed by a military junta that routinely commits atrocities against civilians. That same military recent perpetrated a genocide against the Rohingya. The UN Special Rapportuer has already said that the planned elections are a "sham" to entrench the junta.

But climate-fueled wildfires are not solely acts of God. They’re also acts of policy. Of course we can’t stop every spark or every wind gust, but we absolutely control how flammable the world is when those sparks fly: how much fossil fuel we burn, how hot and dry the West becomes, how and where we build, how seriously we take prevention and adaptation. Fires like Palisades don’t just happen to us; they’re intensified or restrained by decisions made by people in power.

WHO NEEDS IMAGINATION when the dystopia is right in front of you? During the Palisades and Eaton Fires, scenes played out that could have appeared in Butler's Parable. Private firefighting outfits defended companies, utilities, and ultrarich enclaves while other parts of the city burned. The county's defenses were overmatched. Its fleet of fire trucks was hobbled by ongoing consolidation in the fire-engine industry, where giant companies have been delaying maintenance orders and raising prices for new trucks. Hundreds of incarcerated people, making at most $10 a day, worked as firefighters for the state. All of these things at least partly reflect the increasing regularity, intensity, and cost of fires. They preview the kinds of problems that climate change will bring to our local governments and economies, manifesting most severely in poor and minority communities, but affecting us all.
