So Carney gets a standing ovation from the business/political community in Calgary after the MOU, and Smith gets booed at the UCP convention. Alberta!

To bring this back full circle, that’s why I was initially optimistic as the feds seemed singularly focused on strengthening carbon pricing. Perhaps naively, I thought Carney agreed as every third sentence at the event today was about lowering emissions (to a corporate Calgary audience no less).

That was very transparent with the most recent TIER changes. Allocate a whole bunch of TIER credits to CCS (cough Pathways), thereby giving that project some incremental value while completing cratering the worth of an offset to anyone else generating them. Like you say, GoA will try to find a way.

Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m calling “very concerning” in my earlier post. If that truly is the end result, it would be devastating. It would also work against supposedly joint goal of the feds and the province to build out carbon capture, as you need a strong enough market incentive to justify it.

If this MOU does not result in more stringent carbon pricing in the medium term, I agree.

Also we’re surmising Feds are increasingly seeing the CER as unconstitutional, so trying to exact remaining leverage with disputing provinces by trading CER compliance for other emission wins.

From Carney Chamber event today, lot of us left with impression that agreement was accelerate TIER to $130 by April 2026. Based on that, was thinking maybe emission cap not needed if pricing is stringent enough to get same reductions country-wide. These disparate interpretations are very concerning.

Mmhmm, admittedly lived through the experience vicariously through friends and family as I stayed in the safe confines of Edmonton and Calgary. But it was uncanny on how accurate it all was based on seeing how my buddies lived. A few of our mutual actually.

As a Northern Albertan where the story is set, I 10000X recommend it. It’s truly phenomenal.
