I have a lot of inherited Corning ware. I hope you moved on the admire my Spode plates. Also the prosecco hides a nice bottle of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

Plopping lemon pie right over Georgia is wrong. Maybe those people in Atlanta like it, but key lime is a fave here and pecans are literally a local industry.

Oh, and yes, I cooked all that.

My brother and I watched The Fantastic Four, which was better than I expected.

She’s probably not going to win. But if she does win, it will be an earthquake, and will be interpreted by everyone according to their priors.

Yes, and I want it in Latin as well.

I should add that I live in the south and when it’s hot, I will sometimes wear a (very nice) polo shirt.

Two reasons: some years ago, I looked in the mirror and asked myself, “why am I still dressing like an impoverished graduate student?“ And I inherited a lot of nice ties for my father. I do think I get a little more respect from students this way, but that doesn’t really matter much to me.

Fwiw I teach in the history department of a 28000 student university and I’m the only guy who wears a tie.

Depends. One should dress in a fashion appropriate to the venue. What if I'm taking her to a ball game?

So if you won't accept the job of Sec of Defense . . . Secretary of Transportation? Undersecretary of Transportation for Air Travel?

My Russian in-laws did exactly that.

My patriarchate has long since moved on from Foundation to the Orange Catholic Bible. Get with the times, man.

How about this? After the census, still have an *average* of two senators per state (currently 100), but distribute them so that each state has a maximum of three and a minimum of one, depending on population. Not a perfect solution, but it evens things out somewhat while keeping federal system.

How can I get one of these in the USA?

Just finished teaching this. Actually I would defend Athenian democracy as long as it’s limited to city-states. What screwed them was imperialism and unfortunately democracy of any kind and any size is no sure defense against that particular disease.

Yes, and that SHOULD mean campaigning where the votes are, not where the electoral votes are.
November 22, 2025 at 1:17 AM
And while it was a swing state, I’m sure it was fought over. But now that, on a presidential level, it’s not, Democrats just take it for granted. Of course things change, but I don’t think that invalidates my point.
November 22, 2025 at 1:16 AM
Going with the popular vote means candidates will actually campaign in states they would otherwise ignore.
November 22, 2025 at 12:58 AM
I completely disagree with his logic. It is voters in large states like California or Massachusetts that get ignored because no republican will seek votes there. What would be the point? What Democrat is going to spend time trying to get votes in places like Wyoming or Idaho? There’s no point.
