Oh man 100%!!! A lot of times in these kinds of stories when they flashback to past events I'm like "yeah yeah yeah let's get back to the main plot!"

In all seriousness though, Martha Wells is an excellent character writer. I think her plot craft is also top notch but it's her characters that truly make me love her work. Even the ones who are purposefully abrasive (LOOKING AT YOU DAHIN) I can't help but care about. It's art.

I thought that goodness made his bad decisions so striking because he didn't need to make them with so much support in his life but he did anyways. Many times over.
And same with the monster. He did awful things on purpose in the book and they stripped that from him too. No nuance.

I've heard some people say that GDT was inspired by the over-the-top-ness of telenovelas and stuff so I can see that influence there but I was sad that the nuance was stripped so much and the goodness in Victor's life wasn't there.
