When you rent a property, you're paying for the landlord's mortage + the money to upkeep the house + whatever the landlord wants in profit. Renting a property will always be more expensive on a monthly basis than having a mortage for it, and increases to mortages will mean increases to rent prices.

I think the thing that's really scratching my brain about this is that the "all pop stars lipsync nowadays" complaint comes from the 2000s, so not only is this a hacky opinion of someone who doesn't know what they're on about, it's a hacky opinion from over two decades ago.

Part of me isn't surprised, and yet part of me wonders whether Blinding Lights would actually fit in a playlist of actual 80s hits - surely the production would make it stick out like a sore thumb?

Agreed; she's incredibly good at keeping in control of her work and keeping it focussed even as she's throwing the kitchen sink into it.
