begging people to learn to separate “i like it” with “it’s good.”

I’ve said that Arien is the easiest OC for me to draw just because it mostly involves dumping black and then erasing/refining, but he’s also probably theoretically the simplest to physically sculpt just because you just get a ton of black clay and then a limited amount of clay in other colors.

This one gets me yelled at but yeah IP is just a workers rights issue. It doesnt get more leftist when the consumer demands my surplus value instead of the bosses
I imagine most of the people trying to claim that stealing indie ebooks is leftism simply have never had to worry about paying rent or for groceries but sorry, your desire for free luxury goods is outweighed by the material needs of their creators

It’s rare that I get to directly practice speaking Japanese these days, but I think I ended up spooking my hairdresser because for after all these years she’s done my hair every now and then, she never knew I spoke passable Japanese. (It was a fun conversation.)

I have a day job!!

I have one of the most boring 9-to-5s on the planet!!!

I make VERY GOOD money from advances/royalties alone (hi, I’m a bestseller!), but I’m also the breadwinner and we need health insurance. No way am I abandoning a stable, quiet, low-pressure “email job” in this economy.
almost every novelist you read who's not from the airport fiction or bestseller sections is working a full on day job, including multi-award winners and absolute legends, or they have a spouse or trust that supports them. virtually across the board. just normalize in your mind that's how it works.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

ascribing cult-like behavior to people, many who are disabled, who have no desire to risk debility/illness from nonessential activities when ample options exist outside bars/restaurants to be safely in community with people reveals both a profound lack of imagination and a desiccated set of values.
I don’t know, I thought after Long Covid effectively ended my chance at a directing career, ruined my health, my energy, my ability to eat a lot of foods, and my body, it would seem pretty obvious why I don’t want to get it again, even going so far as to sacrifice (the horror!) bars and restaurants.

I will be the first to admit I couldn’t understand why anyone would oppose Assisted Dying… and then I became disabled and had it “offered” to me.

It’s not compassionate when there’s coercion.

It’s not dignified when it’s offered in lieu of care.

Listen to disabled people.

Taking a hiatus from art and comics was a painful decision that I was putting off for as long as possible, but for the first time in a while, I feel more energy and focus in other areas of my life. I’m no longer beating my tired self up after my day job up over why I’m not doing comics.

Today I want to remind you that your worth isn't tied to productivity. I fall into this cycle a lot too, but we have to remind ourselves every day: you still deserve rest and kindness. You're not a machine and you're allowed to just be. Don't forget to love and take care of yourselves 🧡🍂

Alice Wong taught us that disabled people don’t just leave memories behind—they leave infrastructure. Lineages of care. Methods of collectivity, survival. She named the connective tissue that holds our communities together, even across death, even across the losses that come too fast and too often.

They won't ever be able to get rid of us, no matter what. No amount of hateful legislation can change the fact of our existence.

Yep. And even people with healthy lifestyles are just one car wreck (or Covid infection) away from disability.
Another name for this would be "pre-existing conditions," a way used to exclude disabled people from health care for decades in the US.

Understand, when you hear people talk about "rewarding the healthy" - these are policies that have a body count.
Please understand that "reward people for being healthy", in health insurance, also translates to "punish people for being disabled."

The people who are most vulnerable, most in need, will be asked to bear higher costs, in many cases, pricing them out of accessing health care, into early graves.

This is actually why I love webcomics so much. Especially when it’s just a labor of love of a single person. It really does feel like you’re seeing into that person’s mind in a weirdly transparent way.

Writing achieves this in general, but comics take an even deeper step into a person’s mind.
Comic books are (and this isn’t hyperbole) the greatest story telling medium that has ever existed. The combination of text and images rendered with a human hand is the most direct path from one mind to another. All other medium pale in comparison.
Anyone have a particularly hot comic take?

Respect Alice Wong’s call here:
“When I am in public spaces and see most people unmasked either because they think the virus is a hoax, that masking is virtue signaling & a sign of weakness, aren't thinking about it, or that they simply don’t care, I feel like an expendable burden not worth saving.”
COVID Isn’t Going Anywhere. Masking Up Could Save My Life.

Plenty of people are inspired to write because of amazing media they consumed, but do you ever instead get inspired by bad or disappointing media? Like say, I wish X was good and/or there needs to be a better version of that?

"why don't women want to have more kids?!"

Because you made a country they want to flee.
"In 2025, 40% of women aged 15 to 44 say they would move abroad permanently if they had the opportunity. The current figure is four times higher than the 10% who shared this desire in 2014, when it was generally in line with other age and gender groups."
Record Numbers of Younger Women Want to Leave the U.S.
The percentage of younger women in the U.S. who express a desire to migrate permanently has surged in the past decade.

Talking a bit about TSDD (Especially since I’m bummed about delaying it):

There’s no reference to the IRL ongoing pandemic, but there’s one underlying idea that is prevalent, that being, “Hey, uh, an incalculable number of people just fucking died and our world is irreparably different, hello…?”

Masking helps stop disabled people like me dying, being excluded from society, and avoids passing on this kind of preventable illness. But if that’s not worth the tradeoff for you, consider protecting yourself. Just think about if you really need your face uncovered while sat silently on a train
