Apparently I've never done an intro post.

Hi, I'm an amateur bloggist at www.thepuddingblog.blog at least when life allows me. I mostly write about #comics and international television. Lately I've been preoccupied with mental health (in my life and on the blog).

Constructive feedback welcome

As is my tradition, the day after the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, let's remember that we can be like the Mary Ellen Carter and rise again.

I used to find little more insufferable than people who only use the original language title for movies and such. Now I am one of those people.

But, lest you think me a hypocrite, one of the few things that I find more insufferable than those people is myself. So it's very consistent.
Started in on Die Kaiserin, almost exclusively because I watched Devrim Lignau in a vampire-free adaptation of Carmilla (interesting concept, could've been done better) and recognized her as I was scrolling through Netflix options. She plays the title role in & is the best part of both.

silver lining to the cave-in:

the house will need to vote on the raw deal the Senate just passed this means either Johnson will have to open the House, swear in Grijalva and let her sign the discharge petition, OR continue to refuse to do so making it clear that the GOP is the problem

Anyway, finally got to see the @realgdt.bsky.social Frankenstein in a theater (on 35mm!) after thinking I missed my opportunity bec/of illness. The film is an event unto itself, maybe my favorite of his.

Also, now I want to rewatch The Terror because boats stuck in ice are great.

I realize there are bigger problems, but I'm also pissed at the Senators for ruining my post-movie buzz. Can't I just have one nice out and not come back to democracy crumbling?

I thought for sure Uber was toast when it was losing 2.5 billion a quarter, but it somehow gained a ton of value in its IPO and somehow become profitable. So OpenAI losing 12 billion in a quarter only just reinforces how little actual economics comes into play in the modern world.

Feels like a moment where it's worth repeating that 988lifeline.org has a webchat w/an actual trained human who can help if you're having a mental health crisis. ASL video chat too. LLMs could link people to it, but so could you.

you know, I convinced five writers/artists to join my book club. I think at least two of them would qualify as non-hypothetical answers to this.

Sorry guys.
I asked this before over at The Old Place and the answers delighted me. So again:

Who is an artist you admire who you suspect would not like you if they met you personally?

I think Peter Dinklage is fantastic. I would absolutely get on his last nerve. He'd be looking for the door while we spoke.

watching the C-3 debate in Parliament, where all sorts of hypotheticals are proffered that don't apply to the bill, and in some cases address current law that C-3 wouldn't change.

finally got a hold of the library's copy of Helen of Wyndhorn and it lived up to the hype.

Apparently all you needed to do to predict the NYC election results was read that one N.K. Jemisin novel.

Anyway I think everyone should own a Pilot kakuno pen

Killjoy comment coming up:

I'd be more excited about this if it wasn't clear that the Republicans in DC feel they should govern despite the will of the people, not based on it.

If there's one takeaway from tonight's election, it's that Democrats need to be not-Republicans right now.

(Not saying it's the moral choice, or it will necessarily be this way next November, but...)

there are both bodegas and convenience stores in NYC. You may ask what's the difference, but it's a shibboleth. You have to figure it out on your own, just like how I had to learn how Portlanders pronounce Couch St.
I will support any New York mayoral candidate who admits bodegas are just convenience stores and everywhere in the world has them

Am I wrong that for many people, the thing they like about bsky is the lack of algorithms dictating whose bleats you see?

So then adding a dislike button to better build up feed algorithms seems counterproductve.

What do I know, I don't work in tech. I just abadanon use of it at a high rate.

I've been buying on ebaysince th e90s. I always leave seller feedback when things go smoothly bec/ it seems helpful. I'm just tired of having to leave text when all there is to say is "the thing they sent is the thing they said and it got here".

So instead I leave text emojis now: (ᵒ̤̑ ₀̑ ᵒ̤̑)

Finally got my review of @keezyyoung.bsky.social's Hello Sunshine up on the blog. There's so much to this book, but I focus on how Young denies readers the comforts of metaphor while exploring psychosis. Informative, but also funny, emotional and very scary; it demands close rereading.
SIMILARITY IS NOT ENOUGH
Hello Sunshine is emotional, funny and scary. Keezy Young uses it to explore psychosis without letting readers have the comfort of metaphor.
