There are a bunch of reasons to suspect this was a bad decision (as my lawyer spouse took the time to explain to me): www.ctvnews.ca/toronto/arti...

Finally getting around to reading “The Bright Ages,” when I encounter this line. And lo, I am slain!

Full-throated guffaw, enough to startle at least the person seated across from me. This is what I get for reading on the streetcar.

the Borg (at least before they became a constant presence with a horny queen) aren’t really evil, they’re amoral, they don’t give a shit about anything but growth, all they say is “that’s irrelevant, we’re going to add you to the thing”

They aren’t communists they’re Silicon Valley capitalists

Saving this for the thread
Jokes on them, I’m going to use AI to come up with 8000 businesses for dipshits
Why? Who is this meant to be good for? Nobody wants your shit AI books, never mind 8,000 in a year. Just a terrible idea and a horrible road the publishing industry is heading down.

Great thread
"The whole point of the post-menopausal female." It was an off-handed comment, I suppose. It was said in an off-handed way.

It was made by Peter Thiel VC guy and podcaster Eric Weinstein, and agreed to by Theil VP guy and flopsweat enthusiast JD Vance, and it reveals a lot.🧵

Some of these creepy perverts got rich on tech or crypto or whatever, and they think their wealth makes them geniuses instead of just wealthy, and the ones who didn't get rich through tech or crypto or whatever seem to think the wealth of the others conveys genius upon themselves.

It's fascinating to see every tech company scramble to bloat their products with resource-intensive garbage no users want, solely because every other company is doing it too and no one wants to be left out.
Techies love to think of themselves as bleeding edge disruptors, but really they're lemmings.

How much did you earn in your first job?

At 15yo I bussed tables at an Italian place for $3/hr plus unlimited breadsticks and marinara

At 18yo I baked bagels for $8/hr plus unlimited bagels and sandwich toppings

one of tech’s biggest problems is that it used to invent stuff that made people’s lives better and easier and in recent years has pivoted to “fake money for scams” and “plagiarism machine that puts you out of a job”
This is what blows me away every time. There's no one who NEEDS predictive text machines. It's not curing cancer or feeding people or producing clean energy. It's just sucking up resources, convincing CEOs to fire humans who do better jobs than it can do, and allowing founders to siphon VC money
"will require a breakthrough energy source" my dude, it requires nothing because it doesn't need to exist. you WANT a breakthrough energy source to keep playing, and you can get in line behind the people who actually need it #comemierda

White, middle class people like this have not have lost anything; they experience as loss the *idea* of people they consider less-than getting what they think is uniquely theirs. They turn to authoritarians not to “restore” anything but to build power against the people they imagine “wronged” them.

If you ask someone today to name the builder of Hadrian's Wall, they would give you a funny look. But historical memory is odd, and right up to the 1800s we forgot who built it.

Until in 1840 John Hodgson, an obscure Northumbrian clergyman, published the LONGEST footnote in history... 1/22

So, do historians/social scientists have some professional obligation to *do something* about fabrications like this? And if so, what? 🗃️
I've had a hell of a time dealing with an author's single fabricated quotation compiled from sources I know well -- a fabrication that currently features in a magazine piece, an academic monograph and an AHR article, and that seems, ironically, to have come about through sloppy secondhand quotation.

Honestly, the main reason I want to get this goddang thesis done (aside from the fact that I promised myself a new espresso machine once I graduate) is that I just want to be able to read for pleasure again. At least for a little bit.
