it’s crucial in managing these athletes that our approach isn’t about criticising or critiquing or telling them they are doing things wrong, it's about highlighting this, getting them to understand how we make these little mistakes & how to put systems in place to try and manage it.

I believe that athletes are very much the same as they always were, but circumstance rather than choice means we are now able to make these well intentioned mistakes due to “the perfect storm” being a modern day issue.

A bad race didn’t necessarily result in a knee jerk race entry as easily as it does today.

Metrics & training data wasn’t displayed left, right & centre all those years ago.

there were less events making it difficult to race in a more impromptu and reactionary way week to week, month to month through a season.

Our lives weren’t filled with pre race kit flat lays & medal Mondays that made you feel like you were missing out.

Of course, all endurance athletes had the same motivation but maybe we were buffered a little bit, somewhat protected from this issue because social media wasn't there,

This naturally allows the injury risk cycle to reduce (normally).

This fortunately wasn’t such an issue 20-25 years ago when I started.

I’m a fan of regular racing for experience in the early years if I’m honest, but it must have purpose & intent.

as you start to be more selective in your goals/plans, you maybe reduce the calendar & prepare for a select number of performance goals.

Now, the 5-6 events become 10-15 & continue until an unsustainable race calendar, where rather than trying to peak to perform & recover for certain events each year, we have a continuously cycle of events, of summer race season into winter race season, of short course into long course…

influencers/social media, in clubs, online groups or from marketing & advertising.

These new races are more accessible and available than ever before so it’s easy to fill that event calendar up (finances permitting).

As the second season comes along we want do all of these races from the previous year because we don't want to miss out on the ones we enjoyed, or we want to see how much we can improve performance, but we also want to do other, new races that we’ve learned about from friends,

Many athletes join an endurance sport & enjoy the early seasons of competing/racing with an excitement & hunger to do as much as we can, as often as we can.

We have a first season of entering maybe 5-6 events and when the season ends, we can’t wait to get going again in year 2.

This little circuit looks to work in the ways we want to more specifically.

Try as a non stop routine for 30-60 secs each exercise.

Rest 1-2 mins and repeat 2-3 times.
