Fisheries biologist working with the Oregon Dept of Fish and Wildlife, monitoring coastal fall Chinook. Birder, forager, all-around amateur naturalist and photographer.
Today's #BirdoftheDay theme is #BirdsonTwigs. While on a birding trip in Central Oregon, a lot of birds loved these bare tree tops, allowing some great views and photos! #Nature #Photography #Birds #PNWBirding #Oregon

For the #BirdoftheDay theme of #Movement, here's an American White Pelican (one of the largest birds in NA) flying over a marsh out in Central Oregon. Although most people think of them as ocean birds, White Pelicans breed inland. #Nature #Photography #Birds #PNWBirding #Oregon

Been a minute since I posted any #fieldwork pictures. These are from a new survey I did Tuesday. Kind of surreal, it follows old train tracks out along a river. There's houses at first, but then they fall away, and it's just you, the river, and the crumbling rail line. #Nature #Photography

"Meet your meat!" (Shamelessly stolen from @pftompkins.bsky.social character Randy on Bob's Burgers S1.E3) The wild Turkey, Meleagris gallopavo. Progenitor of the common domesticated version, but gorgeous wild birds as well, and widespread across the US thanks to introduction. #Birds #Nature #Oregon

This cute little Douglas Squirrel was foraging on a downed tree, apparently unconcerned by my presence in the river below. #Mammals #Nature #Oregon

Out foraging again today. Here's the iconic Pacific golden chanterelle, Cantharellys formosus. A beautiful #mushroom as well as one of the best for eating (imo). #Nature #Photography #Oregon

First real foray of the season out into the coast range today with @sirisharmony.bsky.social We did... Pretty well. Several pounds of chanterelles, a few B fibrillosus (not pictured) and this good sized Phaeolus. #Nature #Mushrooms #Oregon

Here's one for spooky season (which as far as I'm concerned runs through Xmas). There's something unavoidably macabre about my work... Everything I'm looking for is either dead or dying, often extremely decayed. And no, you don't get used to the smell. #Nature #FishScience #Salmon #fieldwork #Oregon

A pile of Chinook Salmon seen spawning in a tributary of the Siletz River today. This is fairly high up in the system, so there are still good numbers of live fish around. #Nature #fieldwork #Fish #Salmon #Oregon

So, what did you do at work today? I had to hike my way up this boulder field... In the rain! Probably the toughest part of my survey, and of course it comes shortly before the end... #Nature #fieldwork #Fisheries #Oregon

Today the #BirdoftheDay theme is #paddling, birds standing or walking in shallow water. Here's a Great Egret knee deep in the water at my local wildlife refuge.
