Murphy is clearly in the poptimist camp and his arrangements of pop songs really stand out to me as the best in this grene, on par with what Frisell was doing in the 80s/90s

I had to copy some stuff into a protobuf data structure at work a while ago and I wasn't sure if the reference lifetime was going to be ok so I asked the sort of engineer who makes even me look junior. They stared at me for a second before running awy saying "brb gotta fix something" 🙃

Ok maybe Scala isnt that good but learning it changed a lot for me for the positive.

And maybe the problem isn't Python but the monoculture of it. And of the vultures who make their living selling "solutions" when the solution is to pick a different language.

We're not supposed to be evangelists and we're not supposed to make Rust look better through comparison to languages other people like I get it I really do but maybe I just genuinely don't like C++ and Python? Maybe I think Scala owns actually even if some of the people that write it are stinky.

I have real criticisms of lang unrelated behavior in C++ leadership but ok that aside I do know the C++ folks are (mostly) trying their best.

But wow I just feel like they keep digging the whole deeper. I feely vaguely the same way about Python to be 100% honest e.g. no-GIL python is a mistake IMO.

some for other PLs.

I grow more and more convinced every day that language *does* matter, and it matters a lot. I have written up to 7 langs at the same place! Currently three if you count SQL.

Rust and a few others seems to just make a lot more right choices I don't know what else to say lmao.

I apologize my joke post is getting more earnest with every reply but ok I finished the perf quiz. It was awesome.

I try and learn a new PL thing more or less every day (excepting vacation and some weekend days), even if small. I have finished multiple Rust books cover to cover this year. And...

TBH a big part of this for me is that I write C++ at work every day now, and I used to write Rust at work.

I wrote C++ at work before I wrote Rust at work though. It's really not that I wrote Rust and saw the light, it's that I had to stop writing Rust and I glimpsed the void.

It's easy to say "the plural of anecdote is not data" but wow is it hard to reconcile this chart with what my parents paid for rent in Boston when I was a kid vs what I pay now lmao.

Or how much I spent on grad school vs them.

It seems inconsistent with how much the price of houses, medical procedures and tuitions have risen relative to incomes, but it's not trivially easy to disprove.

It may represent a shift towards lower relative cost options (downsizing) that have kept outlay the same but with less to show for it.
