Discussing books earlier, looked at my copy of Slan by A.E. Van Vogt to see when it was from. 1962 apparently, and it has a railway ticket, presumably used as a bookmark by the previous owner. It is 30 years old and still says "British Rail"

A friend of a friend on Facebook (so you know it's reliable etc) said kids at his son's school have started saying "That's AI!" when they don't believe something.

"AI" may be becoming schoolyard slang for "bullshit" and I for one think we should support this evolution of language.

Ernst awaits his fate on death row. The guards outside are discussing the execution. Guard: "How are they setting up the scaffold? Is it a beheading or a hanging?" Guard: "It's a beheading. Hanging's too slow for a Demon..." Guard: "Really? Shoot! I had my money on a hanging!" Ernst looks horrified because he realises he's not going to get a trial after all Guard: "I thought the last Demon they beheaded broke the guillotine when he hardened his skin..." Guard: "Heh, yeah... They still haven't fixed it. They'll use the old fashioned block and axe. No chance of that happening THIS time, he's got anti-magic cuffs!" Guard: "Heh, good! Vector art of Areon, my werewolf-like alien character. It's the first page of his character sheet. He's a member of the "Lupine" species who are technologically advanced and make use of body augmentations, but keep them subtle since they value their natural appearance. Areon looks very much like a werwolf: He has a wolf's head, dark gray fur all over his body, his legs are digitigrade and his posture is hunched. Unlike a regular werewolf, he has a kangaroo-like tail and a different nose. Vector art of Areon, my werewolf-like alien character. It's one page of his character sheet about the control strip, a black strip on his back going all the way down to the tip of his kangaroo-like tail. "Lupine typically have a control strip on their back reaching all the way to the end of their tail. It fulfills two purposes: 1. It’s a control unit for internal body augmentations, such as nanobots to accelerate an individual’s healing process and protect them from diseases and poison. 2. It’s an interface for external accessories. These can be clamped onto connector modules along key areas." There's a small drawing of the strip showing the connector, and one more with a bag attached. "The second half of this system is the visor. Unlike the control strip, the visor isn’t permanently integrated into the body and can be worn by individuals whenever they choose to. Apart from its functionality as communication device, it also wirelessly connects to the control strip, visualizes the status of both internal augmentations and external accessories, and even lets the user control them." There's a small drawing afterwards of Areon wearing a black visor with white shapes rendered on its surface resembling eyes and nostrils.

screenshot of a tumblr post from user “wildmansters” The thing that really boils my potatoes about Al in general is that I have been a creative professional for over a decade now and the devil has ALWAYS been in the details. Big and small, I've had single-person businesses rip me to shreds over how their colors turned out on newsprint, and have worked with huge companies with THICK brand guidelines with every detail of their brand identity laid out and enforced with an iron fist. But I guess all of that stuff doesn't matter anymore? Who gives a fuck if this Al generated baby has six fingers, that mom-and-pop shop is still going to use it. That rug from Temu says Happy Thanksgivirg? Oh well haha it's just a silly funny thing now (nevermind that you never would have given a B-grade item from a craft show the same consideration). I don't actually care that the Al Coca-cola ad has a truck that changes size every scene, but I can't help but think about how, if it had been some poor underpaid artist, they would have been laughed out of the building. I don't really know how to put it in a succint way but it just feels all the more obvious how much more grace and flexibility has always been possible but never offered.
