I was accepted to Hopkins but had to defer enrollment to Fall 26 due to a lack of $$. As the breadwinner, I don't make enough to support my family and cover tuition. Student loans are not an option. My goal is to work in clinical ethics, where I'll fight for my community.

The bad essay was an attack on trans people, turned in to be graded by a trans person, with an obvious intention of getting the trans person removed. The trans person has been suspended during the investigation.

Just more bigoted GOP grift.

Hey, so, I've been fired. Now that I'm unemployed like the other half of Bluesky, if anyone knows of work for a writer, reporter, or nonprofit grants manager, I'd be much obliged. You all know where to find me.

You don’t gotta band it to elitist white cis dudes who clutch their pearls whenever a trans woman has the nerve to speak plainly and bluntly in criticizing them.

It’s feigned moral outrage. It’s giving “good heavens”. It’s giving “they’re disrupting the opera”.

Here's what this is actually about, dumbass

Nah…. Better to dissect her every move and action and obfuscate the clear role transphobia plays in this situation, because it’s easier to just criticize a trans femme than to actually engage in tangible support or effective advocacy.
Here’s a novel idea: what if we discussed how to support the TA while she’s going through this. How do we help an academic worker who is being institutionally thrown under the bus and actively harassed for doing her job because of who she is?

A college student complaining about a grade on a paper is not national news. Not even close. The details have minimal import outside the class itself.

Well-funded political activists targeting profs and TAs—in this case because they're trans—with the help of elected state officials? National issue.
December 1, 2025 at 5:31 PM
When I was a TA, despite how much of a shithead my prof was, he would throw elbows and burn buildings down to make sure i was protected and safe.

If any individual is to be blamed or criticized in these situations it's the prof/advisor who is supposed to support the TA.
While I was TAing during my first MA, we were tasked with solo teaching a couple sections a semester. Our advisor encouraged us to bring these types of situations (really any situation we didn't know how to handle) to her to resolve. We were students still learning, & our tenured profs protected us
If you are a chair of a department or supervise grad students, it might be important to collaborate with your colleagues on ways to strategize when a "problem essay" comes down the pike. It's one small way of protecting each other.

That Viral Essay Scandal is (SURPRISE!) Actually About Trans People
A shoddy Oklahoma University essay went viral. Cis people think this is about conservatives whining for better grades. Trans people see a planned attack on a trans academic. (Note for free subscriber...

💯Absolutely. When trans folks demanded bolder support under "sunnier" skies, we were called whiners, alarmist, entitled, all manner of things...even by our kin, for claiming we were "entitled" to be defended at any point before the most dire and grim moments.

Disgruntled and incompetent members of the majority are used to push members of the minority from the public sphere. "Religion" is currently being used to push trans people out of academic life. It's akin to the crusade against critical race theory to rid spaces of black academics.
If you're only focused on the actions of the trans TA and not the systems of academic oppression and the anti-trans hate machine, regardless of whatever justification you bring to it, I will think you a deeply unserious person when it comes to actually defending trans people.

A lot of people are ignoring how the TA who was targeted (who is Trans) gave the 0 grade but the professor (who is Cis) reviewed and confirmed.

This isn't some rogue Grad student who attacked a student. This was a TA doing her job who has become the latest victim of right-wing transphobic hatred.
*sigh* it is simultaneously true that 0/25 is probably too harsh a grade AND that if you are going balls to the wall to complain about the difference between a 0 and a F (say, 12-15), you are missing the forest for the trees. the suspension/investigation is the far more important issue.
