Skyshade by Alex Aster Read on a Kindle 3/5 stars I am not sure where to begin really. The first two books were so fun & I enjoyed them a lot, but whatever magic was in those books didn’t transfer to this one. Initially it was off to a rough start because as soon as I heard it wasn’t the last book in the series I immediately stopped my reread & lost interest in finding out what happens until more books came out. However, finally getting around to reading it I was excited to see what happened next in this story. That is until I read it. This desperately needed another round of editing. There were lots of errors, oddly worded sentences & repetition. I found myself stopping just to figure out what was trying to be said. I understand an error every once in a while we are human & things can slip through the cracks. It happened often enough though to where it pulled me out of the story. The beginning was slower but that was fine with me. I did get confused on the pacing where it was slow then a random time skip then a bunch of stuff happening. It didn’t seem to flow from one thing to another. All the action happens in the last 30% of the book. It felt a little info dumpy as there’s a lot of new information to take in right at the end. As others have said, the love triangle seems stretched out way too thin. I found it odd how Isla seems to forget the love interest who isn’t in her immediate vicinity then when they show back up acts like the time apart was the worst thing imaginable. I felt like I was getting whiplash. If she really did miss Oro then I wish we were shown that instead of her telling the audience in her internal thoughts. There were also a lot of explicit scenes that felt too much to be in a series that’s marketed as ya. Nothing wrong with the scenes themselves, but please market your book to the correct audience. I’m not going to even touch on how insufferable Isla was. My rating is for Grim, Oro & the last 30% of the book.

The Grace Year by Kim Liggett Listened to the audiobook 5/5 stars In Garner County, during their 16th year the girls are sent to an isolated compound in the woods in order for them to release their power into the wilderness. As The Grace Year gets closer for Tierney James, she’s making plans to ensure she can set up the best life for herself as she can for after she returns. That is, if she can survive the elements, poachers who want to skin the girl’s for their magic & the other Grace Year girls. I’m not really sure where to start. This is one of those books that you need to sit & reflect on when it’s over. It is beautifully written & will haunt you long after you finish. From the start this was a captivating read that had me glued to my headphones. The tension was high & I needed to know what happened next at all times. The way the audiobook was set up there wasn’t many chapters so it was hard to find good pausing points because I always felt like I was in the middle of something. If you haven’t I highly recommend listening to the audiobook. This narrator was able to bring these characters to life & really get you immersed in the story. Each character had a unique sound despite having a single narrator. Truly a one woman show you will want to listen to. There are a lot of important themes throughout this book. For a dystopian novel, there are a lot of scenarios a lot of readers may have experienced in their own life which may hit close to home for a lot of people. When this book is having The Handmaids Tale & the female Lord of the Flies vibes please take that seriously & determine if this is the book for you & your headspace. Otherwise I think this is a beautifully haunting read & cannot recommend the audiobook enough

How to make a horror movie & survive by Craig DiLouie Listened as an audiobook 2/5 stars Max Maury is a horror director set on making a truly scary film while his producer wants him to keep cranking out more of the same that he’s been making thus far. One day he comes across a camera that was once able to capture real horror. It’s not until after he finds out about the cameras true evil that he decides he’s going to finish his new movie & use the camera for it. I picked up this book looking for horror & this book did not deliver. It seems to be more of a horror plot with comedic elements & gore. There wasn’t anything chilling, scary or suspenseful. I was entertained enough to finish & find out what happened but it wasn’t what I was expecting when picking up this book. The plot moved rather slowly which I’m usually fine with but it was littered with explaining movie making terminology & the behind the scenes of actually making a movie. The movie doesn’t start getting made until after the halfway mark, then the rest of the book is a race to the finish. I listened to the audiobook & the narrator did a fantastic job. It felt like the characters were distinct & breathed some life into these characters.

Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay Listened to audiobook 3/5 stars In the early 90s, a group of young filmmakers shot their film, Horror Movie. Only three clips from the original movie were published on the internet, but even still the film has grown a rapid fan base. Now years later, Horror Movie has been picked up for a reboot. The story of the past & present of this films history is being told to us by the last surging member of the cast. As I mentioned above, the chapters alternate between past & present but also have a screenplay in each chapter. I listened to the audiobook which I felt was well done in its performance, but only being able to listen made the screenplay parts a little confusing. Chapter titles make it clear between past & present but the screenplay in within these chapters. After a while I got the hang of it. Overall, it’s a very slow burn. I felt the overall vibes of this book were strange & creepy but not scary as I had anticipated from a book about a haunted film set. A few scenes did make my stomach churn & the ending wasn’t what I was expecting but felt a little anticlimactic after the slow burn of this book. I was immersed enough to finish this to the end & felt the audiobook performance was great. But when I think to the content of the book I actually just experienced I don’t think this was the read for me.

Interview with the Devil by Michael Harbron Listened via audiobook 2/5 stars Starting this book had an amazing hook. I really felt like I picked correctly when I was searching through horror books wanting a scary read. However, once that wore off the rest of the book did not continue this way. I was fine with the slow burn beginning & by beginning I mean the entire book up until the last 3 chapters. I forgot how I originally picked up this book for something scary based on the title, cover & synopsis. But I became interested at how everything was going to play out & stuck through with it. I will say as we got closer to the interview I found myself wanting to see what was going to happen next. A couple of twists happen that really caught my interest. But by the time the interview rolled around I found myself completely uninterested. Then the book ends mid interview & we are left with a “to be continued.” The synopsis & title could use some editing, it feels misleading as they only summarize really the last 20% of the book. This book presents itself as an interview with the devil but it’s only present at the very end & gets cut off midway through. Maybe now that everything is established the other books in the series will really pick up, but that’s not a journey I am going to take. And as a side note, reading other reviews mentioning accounts attacking them for the criticism in their reviews & these accounts seemingly only interacting with books from this author has left a sour taste in my mouth. Don’t know if it’s friends, family or the author themself but it has personally made me solidify more that I won’t be continuing this series.
