like McDowell himself is; but one simply can't train graduate students to produce work which sets the agenda for decades to come for people of radically different philosophical inclinations. Aristotelianism, though? That was designed from the start to generate philosophy essays. Safer job option.

this, and further insisting on their importance? I suspect the answer is just: a career. Nobody ever had a good way to show a replicable way to follow Wittgenstein and Rorty and also function in a modern university philosophy department. The best that anyone seems able to do is "be a unique genius"
