You'd have a hard time convincing me this isn't who they've always been, maybe imperial with a working class lilt pre 1980s but they've *always* been a bulwark to meaningful change and to siphon off just enough anger to stop working class uprising.

In the same time we've spent hundreds of millions but laid no track. The wealthy that were tipped off on the route and bought the land to sell to the government have made a killing though. Meanwhile China has a 600+ kph train that floats. Capitalism is stifling everything.

It's a bit more complicated than that. A state that endorses a Nazi collaborator that murdered 10's of thousands of Jews and does ethnic cleansing doesn't get to do a sob story when it gets punched in the face.
