Seeing Yud's reasoning sometimes feels like watching an exceptionally good Factorio player's stream except their copy of the game is inexplicably missing a cascading swath of the tech tree

Yeah. I don't know of a tactful way to say this, but we're solidly in "they're undeniably good at some very useful things" territory. I totally understand that some don't want to use them for principled reasons, but it's silly to say they're useless.

I don't think we'll be bridging this gulf between us
November 28, 2025 at 2:22 AM
I think in practice that's an excessively rigid definition. Suppose someone donates 50% of their net wealth to a local homeless shelter, with total anonymity EXCEPT they do plan to mention it on a date tomorrow (hoping to impress). Does that mean the donation is not altruistic?
November 28, 2025 at 2:19 AM
Is it only altruism if there's no advantage to the giver whatsoever? I don't think you'd find much altruism at all in that case; most charity AFAICT derives from things like a desire for status and soothing a sense of shame/guilt
November 28, 2025 at 2:16 AM
I get the sense you're defining altruism in some way that necessarily excludes capitalists, because as stated that's plainly false
November 28, 2025 at 2:14 AM
What in the world does this have to do with math?
November 27, 2025 at 2:42 PM
What does that have to do with whether capitalism and altruism are incompatible?
November 27, 2025 at 2:38 PM
As written, you seem to be saying that it is not possible for someone to do good things AND ALSO defend data centers.
November 26, 2025 at 8:06 PM
Bizarre. Definitely not how things should work
November 26, 2025 at 7:41 PM
If I also defended data centers, would that mean I too am not doing good things?
November 26, 2025 at 7:40 PM
Do you believe win-win arrangements between two people are possible?
November 26, 2025 at 6:59 PM
Getting a bit meta, this post of yours was marked as Rude by BlueSky moderation and I have no idea why. It is decidedly not Rude. How do I talk to about getting that fixed? @moderation.bsky.app is this the way?

There is plenty worth disagreeing about with EA! But it is a large movement with a lot of differing viewpoints within it, all to the same end: making the world better for everyone. Not everyone is a longtermist. Many, many people are working to make the world better today. 2/2

I've donated tens of thousands of dollars in service of charities addressing severe needs in Africa (mosquito nets, Vitamin A supplementation, deworming initiatives, cash transfers encouraging vaccination). There are people alive today because of me, and EA is what inspired me to do this. 1/2
November 26, 2025 at 6:50 PM
I can't think of any normal definition of capitalism that precludes altruism though. Consider Bombas, which donates clothing to homeless shelters for each item purchased. They're doing just fine?
November 26, 2025 at 6:46 PM
I have no doubt you can spin a definition of capitalism for which that is true
November 26, 2025 at 6:41 PM
Freakish to see this as a competition
November 24, 2025 at 3:35 AM
Ok I think you've managed to land on the least effective way to say that then
November 24, 2025 at 2:14 AM
If you're just calculating the marginal cost per query, you're missing out on training. The way AI CEOs talk about their needs is that they're energy constrained. If electricity use was so low, why would they say this?
November 24, 2025 at 1:56 AM
Completely agree that girls struggle under the yoke of enforced traditional norms! Nothing I said should be read as rejecting that. All children are deserving of love and care and support, and we should dismantle enforced traditional norms that hurt them and us.

I talk to a lot of folks interested in LLMs and I don't think I've ever once heard someone say LLM chatbots other than Grok can't be compromised toward corporate interests
