Such irony that « freeing up funding for more roads » at the expense of public transport will do the opposite of freeing up roads from congestion.

Today, I saw a driver overtake a stopped bus and plough through a pedestrian crossing. He beeped three times as he sped though. The beeping was to warn people because, as he had overtaken a bus, he had zero visibility of who was about to step out onto the crossing.

But sure, more hi-vis, everyone

The importance of visibility on our roads cannot be understated, particularly for vulnerable road users including pedestrians, cyclists, e-scooter drivers and motorcyclists.

These are not « accidents », they the result of dangerous machinery being improperly used. Of course the perpetrator didn’t deliberately kill, and I don’t particularly have a problem with a suspended sentence but she shouldn’t be back on the road in 6 years. The default should be a lifetime ban.
What a load of victim-blaming nonsense.

« Remember kids, always wear your hi-vis so that when a distracted driver drives into you @garda.ie can’t blame you » - though they’ll still try. Seriously how about more publicity campaigns on driver behaviour, or a legal campaign against car bloat and/or large entertainment screens in vehicles?
I know far too many people who have been knocked off their bikes, and not once has it happened because of poor visibility or because they were not lit up enough. In each case, it was the fault of dangerous driving and/or dangerous infrastructure.

Obviously there’s the headline here - the importance of reliability and predictability in transport options - but also the link to affordability: this student lives three hours away, maybe spending more time on buses than in lectures during their degree. The logistics shouldn’t be the challenge!
My 4th year students present projects on decarbonisation of transport at 10am. They have lived experience in how far we have to come: I got a 7:20am email from a student whose 6:53am bus didn't arrive, meaning they won't make it for 10am. Happy World Sustainable Transport Day.

In West Cork we have alleged cycling infrastructure that includes shared paths where the mobility path gives way not just to every side road but every private entrance. I saw very similar marking on the great western greenway (though it was better on Achill). Not good enough for 2025.

This ties in well with @ccriadoperez.bsky.social excellent « Invisible Women ». Historically typical male commuting - hub & spoke one round trip per day - modelled and accounted for, chained, multiple trips likely to be women not. Leaving the most precarious most forced into expensive car ownership.
For centuries, cities have been planned by and for able-bodied, gainfully-employed men.

Feminist urban planning isn’t proposing the opposite, but a model that considers all stages of human life, from infancy to old age, without giving greater importance to the productive-work stage.
