Another potential influence might be differences in sensation seeking – a trait characterized by the pursuit of novel and complex experiences – which is associated with increased preferences for intense music and the development of drug use.

This finding may be linked to changes in the brain's reward system caused by repeated dopamine surges from drug use. As a result, everyday rewards may feel less pleasurable or motivating, which could explain why people with substance use disorders are drawn to more intense and complex music.
