First proper coastal Fleurieu recording stint in a long time. Absolutely beautiful weather today. Rapid Bay, Second Valley and the reef at Lady Bay. Traces of the climate-fuelled algal bloom are evident in places, but there’s more-than-human life present, demonstrating nature’s dogged resilience.

What #spotifywrapped tells me is people either haven't listened or have just chosen to ignore the facts artists who were essential to the platform are underpaid, the CEO invests in AI war machines, the submitted content is used to train LLMs, and they ran adverts for ICE the modern day brownshirts.

The real question is not "Why is Bluesky so left-coded," the real question is "Why can't the right exist in a social media environment without algorithmic assistance, where people can ignore them"

My spirit animal? One day it could be a field mouse, the next day, a pine marten. Then I find a recent photo of a bird perched on a fencepost. Look at the pose it strikes, head cocked and simultaneous looking inquisitive and completely stupid. Bingo! Sums up the way I’ve handled this year I guess.

This morning: a new comment on this post. I find it remarkable (and a bit ridiculous) that this is one of two posts on my long running blog that consistently racks up hits/shares that far outweigh the read count of anything else on there.

Continuing transcription of the travel journal in Obsidian. Up to Day 3.5/31. I’m not doing this everyday; pretty much every Friday if I’ve got the energy/patience in the morning to re-read my scribbles and consider whether grammatical first aid should be administered or further detail is necessary.

On the one hand, it’s disappointing that we were a bit early for snow in the Cairngorms back early October, but then again the temperature was probably a bit more agreeable.

One important thing that my trip OS did was it positively renewed my interest in ecology and assessing soundscapes. Despite being horrified by the SA algal bloom and reluctant to go near the ocean, I’ve just got to get on with it. These pics are from Lady Bay reef in 2021. Visiting again in 2 weeks.

As end of year is reached on the power of an oily rag, I’m chipping away at some proper writing. It’s about my recent visit to Maryon Park in London, a film nerd pilgrimage of sorts. Amongst other themes, in search of the sound of two poplar trees that don’t exist any more (or did they ever exist?)

No sign of dead fish or decimated seagrass ecosystems at Lady Bay yesterday afternoon. Small mercies.

3 things that transcribing your recent travel journal will do: 1) reveal how acutely exhausted you were at times but; 2) reveal that you could still get poetic observations down into semi-cohesive form; 3) through reconsidering the structure of sentences, coax out adjacent observations from memory.

2025: Monster year. But a Fleurieu & KI Soundmap update is definitely coming in December. Let me just put these things over here first.
