This is one of my favorites along that line, a piece by Kawanabe Kyosai. He didn't like the way the cat turned out so he pasted a patch over it and re-did it. It's essentially a doodle, or warm-up practice. It was never meant to be show.

I guess he apologized, and people seem to have moved on. I’m not sure how I feel about him at this point- I loved his stuff but he def hit a rough patch.
