Earning out your advance is an accomplishment, but that doesn't necessarily mean you're at an advantage. Nor does it mean you need to earn out your advance to get more book deals under your belt.

Royalty checks do not guarantee financial stability or security.

The book industry moves on quickly. A book's shelf life can be quite short, which impacts sales. Book marketing beyond six months also impacts sales.

There's just too many factors that can affect your coin once you've earned out your advance.

It's difficult to make plans or rely on money from trad pub that isn't advance money. You know what to expect with advance money. You do not know what to expect when you've earned out your advance and next comes royalty money.

It does not help that FabledCo has not paid my publisher ever yet sold special editions of my book. So, I'm owed money I do not know when or if I'll ever get because my publisher has chosen not to pursue legal action.
