And Johnny Alpha marches into history
November 8, 2025 at 11:24 PM
Switching to full colour Colin MacNeil pages for the last part of this story, Johnny is blinded and weak.

But he swears that he’ll save the mutants and get them back home.

He swears it.

Although he tries to fight his way through, Johnny is captured and thrown through the portal. He realises quickly that the alternate dimension is a desolate hellscape filled with monstrous creatures.

He tries to help the mutants, reading the mind of the monster - but doing so leaves him vulnerable

The New Church opens the portal and start to force mutants to leave the planet and walk through the door. Johnny arrives on the scene, followed by Middenface and Feral.

Things are getting bleak
November 8, 2025 at 11:17 PM
On Earth, we meet a new character - a surly young kid called Feral. He’s anti authority, looks like a quintessential Simon Harrison character, and apparently loads of people hated him on debut.

I think he’s fun! A bit TMNT, but a fun character to throw into the mix

The New Church wants all mutants gone from Earth - but realises that saying “we should kill then for being different” isn’t working. Instead, she proposes opening a portal to another dimension, and forcing the mutants to walk through.

Yes this is kinda the plot of Peacemaker S2, we see you, JG

Something major is happening on Earth, and Johnny is determined to find out what. But death seems to be one step behind at all times…
November 8, 2025 at 11:07 PM
At the end of the previous volume, Johnny and Middenface were betrayed and left for dead on a barren planet. Somehow surviving, they eventually manage to find a way off the planet - and immediately start flying back to Earth to get their revenge on Sagan

They’d never ACTUALLY kill off a major character, so I think we’re all safe.

Oh, hey, let’s all read Strontium Dog Volume 7 together! By Alan Grant, John Wagner, Colin MacNeil, Carlos Ezquerra and Simon Harrison >>>

Someone at MCM asked what my stance is on illegal aliens. I told them I’m employed by one and they got so mad

Hey, just to say that Travelling Man were at the show this year, and had a massive booth there

Yesssssssssssss

Onto the shelf it goes. There are two volumes of Scarlet Traces in the Ultimate Collection - collecting everything except “Empire of Blood”, the most recent story, which ran this year in 2000 AD. Loved this!

Again, I’m not going to reveal everything here, but it’s just an incredibly created series. The stories are compelling and the artwork is astonishingly beautiful and bright

She’s flown to Mars to report on the “war” firsthand, and discovers that things are a lot more complicated than she realised. It’s genocide, basically.

Can you see the parallels here
October 18, 2025 at 3:35 PM
The third and final story in this volume jumps ahead in time AGAIN. England has developed ships and have decided to fly to Mars to take the war directly to their enemy - or at least, to stir up patriotism amongst the civilians.

Journalist Lottie returns home and is quickly caught up in a conspiracy
October 18, 2025 at 3:31 PM
They find out where the women were taken. I’m not revealing anything about anything.

This is a really fun read though, Edginton writes dotty English aristos like nobody else, and the mystery draws you in.
October 18, 2025 at 3:26 PM
A drunk writer and his butler find out that young women have been going missing mysteriously. They head out to find out what’s going on, why the women are being taken, and who it is that’s taking them
October 18, 2025 at 3:23 PM
The second story here is set years later, and has a new lead character. It reveals that England took the Martian technology and fused it into their own, advancing science dramatically and giving them near-world domination for their Empire.
October 18, 2025 at 3:20 PM
This follows the original story almost exactly, I think. If you know how that ends, you know how this ends

But the point of Scarlet Traces is that it continues on after that point - with the alien technology landing into English hands…

AND GET ANNIHILATED.

Our protagonist, George, flees the scene, running for his life along with the crowd. The aliens effortlessly decimate the English forces, weaponising unlimited futuristic technology. D’Israeli goes all-in on scale, this series looks incredible
October 18, 2025 at 3:16 PM
This book starts with a straight adaptation of War of The Worlds. Aliens land in Victorian England, a country obsessed with class and dignity. The English citizens explore the crash sites, curiously…
October 18, 2025 at 3:13 PM
Scarlet Traces is the story of what happens AFTER The War Of The Worlds ends. What would the world become if Empire-obsessed Victorian England got hold of a bunch of futuristic alien tech?

Hell for enemies of the British Empire, that’s what. By Ian Edginton and D’Israeli >>>>

Here’s my collection so far. I don’t add a volume to the shelf until after I’ve read it, so there’s loads more still to add to this
