Devastating news, and on New Years Eve of all days. Goodness knows what I’m going to fill my days with now.

The whole Canadian annex feed is simply chapter one of a distraction story, that will be returned to repeatedly, as life under the new president unfolds in its own unpredictable but undoubtedly damaging way.

Dubai is home to many wealthy and well connected people. I can’t help but feel that if this young lad had been the son, brother or nephew of a well connected person in that country the outcome would be very different. UAE authorities are strict when it suits them.

The earnings taper is such an obvious and progressive policy, it beggars belief that it wasn’t introduced in the first place.

Parties of all colours often undervalue the rare politician (like John Prescott) that ‘says it like it is’ and has an abundance of self-awareness. It’s the latter attribute that often leads to disaster for them personally, their party and politics more broadly. RIP John.

It’s always intrigued me the point at which those people with the potential to good with their fame and influence step into their echo chamber, and rarely return.

Liberal or populist, the UK needs a strong international political and economic presence more now than in the last 70yrs. Starmer needs to be busy, so needs a strong deputy with a domestic focus and a stable, united Cabinet. Let’s hope.
