If the bass drops in the forest, and no one is there to hear it, is it still off the chain?

If I don’t know you well (or don’t trust you) I come across as distant and quiet because that’s how I feel safe and have learned to adapt. If I have to communicate with you and it’s important, I do this

I mean the Dredd Scott decision basically sparked the civil war, which the US won and then enacted birthright citizenship to reject Dredd Scott, so getting rid of it is just a reembracing of race being the basis of class and a bunch of other racist bullshit.

Like we fought the civil war about this
without birthright citizenship in the united states, you don't have a democracy and you don't have rule of law.

revoking birthright citizenship gives fascists free rein to purge the country of literally anyone they don't like. it opens the door to atrocities and mass murder. i am not exaggerating.

my brain chimes in with “because it is my heart” every single time i think of, use or hear the word “bitter” and sometimes i speak it out loud and nobody but thomas has any fuckin clue what i’m talking about

(i knew i liked josh for a reason!)
In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, “Is it good, friend?”
“It is bitter—bitter,” he answered;

“But I like it
“Because it is bitter,
“And because it is my heart.”

In the Desert Stephen Crane, 1895.

I'm still shocked that there are people who oppose birthright citizenship and consider themselves Americans, let alone a member of any particular political ideology. To be against the idea that if you're born here, you're a citizen is one of the most anti-american ideas I can conceive of.
still poleaxed by the idea that you could oppose birthright citizenship and still think of yourself as a liberal in any sense of the term.

This is such an active aftershock sequence. We are going to be busy with this one for a while. We have had more than a dozen M4+ events since this story was posted a few hours ago. We havent even really looked at events that are less than M3.5 bc there are too many of the larger events to keep up.

It makes sense in a patriarchy that the age of consent is 18, while allowing child marriage to get around age of consent laws, because the law isn't about protecting children who are too young to consent to sex with adults, it's about protecting a father's property to maintain marriage value.

what follows immediately after the birthright clause? the privileges and immunities and due process clauses? and what follows them? the equal protection clause. all of this is explicitly to say, "the declaration is the constitutional law of the land"

As a longtime fan of HOW IT'S MADE, I can't say I'm surprised exactly by how much any manufactured good is essentially handmade but it's still striking to see how much of even high tech stuff like camera lenses is "a worker with a paintbrush and screwdriver moves stuff around by hand"

I can’t get over how Barbie succeeded because it offered tangible ways for women and girls to celebrate each other (and dress up and go to the movies together) but studios thought it worked because it’s about toys so now they’re making like Bananagrams the movie

Whatever else it can do, this tech adds work and erodes trust. The extra work is time-wasting and wearying, and I resent the erosion of trust most deeply. I cannot believe it is healthy for society to be ever less sure that anything you encounter is the real thought or expression of a fellow human
I spend so much time verifying everything now from art to cited sources to photos to historical references to citations to quotes to legal and medical information that it's really hard to fathom how much work AI has collectively added to the world, not reduced
Here's the reality this example illustrates:

It's not even just about people blindly trusting what ChatGPT tells them. LLMs are poisoning the entire information ecosystem. You can't even necessarily trust that the citations in a published paper are real (or a search engine's descriptions of them).
