Totally agree. If you’re someone who has the ability and time do your own film study, you don’t need to leverage the grades. If you are missing either of those things, the grades can give you a directional sense

I’ve wondered for a while how well you could predict player grade using exclusively advanced charting stats. Pretty simple, so I’m sure someone else has shared it already

EPA & CPOE (the nflfastR versions at least) are open source! But yes, fully agree that it would be much easier to trust PFF if their process/data was more transparent!

I think that’s really the heart of it. QBs own a lot of the process that can make the game look easy. It’s hard (maybe impossible) to definitively pick up on those things.

Not impossible? I think, even with complete play-level grading, you’d struggle to prove that bias.

You’re right! I don’t think this explains away the edge cases, just shows that the process is picking up more than production alone

This is true. This isn’t an argument that PFF grade is strong, just that it is stronger than one of our best alternatives
