Opinion/Guest column: Trump-as-pope image pales into idolatry
The image is not just provocative; it is spiritually offensive and theologically irresponsible.

Still time to register for my class starting next Tuesday evening online where we will read and write poems that unpack resilience. Poems, I think, many of us need to hear... and maybe write? All levels welcome. Recently laid off feds get a discount. (Books not req).

My latest "Poems to Carry You" is about the ways in which poems navigate the relationship with the news, between truth & what feels true — & what they can tell us about leading meaningful lives in spite of & because of it.

News & art made by my 8 year old.

This week's batch of curated poems on resilience is an homage to the people who have helped or cared for others.

"Despite the district’s ruling, Inama refuses to remove the signs, even if it means risking her job. 'There’s no way I would be able to allow myself to just take it down and roll over to what I feel like they’re asking me to do.'"
Teacher ordered to remove signs from classroom, including one saying 'Everyone is welcome here'
“There are only two opinions on this sign: Everyone is welcome here, or not everyone is welcome here,” argues Sarah Inama, a sixth-grade history teacher.

I love Vermonters. So glad the VP chose Sugarbush mountain to ski this weekend and was met with massive protest.

A friend sent this to me and it's very timely. I have incidentally started to memorize a poem again (Invictus) as a way to build inner strength.

I have made it a habit. I call 2 republican senators a day on an issue (lately the DOE for me) like it’s a something on my to-do list. The 5 Calls app makes it very easy to do (although I usually tweak the script). In my mind, something is better than nothing. Make some noise!

I am the granddaughter of Cuban exiles who escaped a Russian-backed Communist regime. To see Marco Rubio, a child of Cuban exiles who fled for the same reason, make friends with Russia today has my grandparents turning in their graves. The utter shame and hypocrisy of it.

Called senators Suzanne Collins and Tim Scott today about protecting DOE. I made contact with Tim Scott’s office twice. The first time they hung up on me so I called back and got another person who was more polite.

We could just be reading great books, watching good movies, and eating fruit. Instead we have to survive/fight miserable power hoarders. What a waste of limited time.

Remember: If we allow ourselves to fall into fatalism, or wallow in disappointment, or become resigned to what is rather than what should be, we will lose the long game.

The greatest enemy of positive social change is cynicism about what can be changed.
