who are the schwelly stans ahead of me

For example: The slower your bat speed the more likely you are to consistently be behind on fastballs, so next steps will need to be controlling for batter's baseline whiff probability by pitch type. Definitely something here but gonna take more work to refine it.

Diff in whiff rate for fastballs vs breaking balls by cumulative fastball timing error

1) Lots of noise!
2) Breaking balls get more whiffs even at extremes

This is before considering some obvious confounders, so most of time it's likely not worth deviating from your game plan.

The reverse is also true: if they've consistently been ahead on slow pitches they're more likely to whiff on another slow pitch
December 3, 2025 at 4:40 PM
Unsurprisingly, if a batter has consistently been behind on fastballs within an at bat they are more likely to whiff on a fastball and less likely to on a breaking ball than they'd be expected to given a pitch's stuff and location.

Won't you take me by the hand
Lead me to the promised land
And let me ride in your big Cadillac

Let me ride in your big Cadillac, Lord Jesus

Made a simulator using a simplified version of a pitching model so I can start testing various pitching strategies (changing pitch usage rates by game state, targeting further outside the zone in certain situations, etc.).

Simulated results match reality pretty well!
