Gilgamesh has quite a big collection

And they've stayed razor sharp for hundreds of years!

Oh yeah and I also highly recommend checking out the fan edit called "Mega Man 3 Improvement" which fixes a lot of bugs, reintroduces some unused content and even creates a new intro for the game, which is something 3 conspicuously lacked before. High quality stuff!

It was theorized that the show's writers just saw the intro to Mega Man 5 and assumed he was a villain, despite it becoming clear by the end that he was being impersonated by a villainous robot called Dark Man.

But then Dark Man showed up in the second season of the show too...

He was also famously the secondary antagonist of the '90s Ruby Spears cartoon, which was a bit odd. He had little interest in Wily's schemes in the show, mostly just wanting to prove he was superior to Mega Man; which is a bit more in line with Bass from the later games.

We then see an ending sequence with Mega Man in a field as a small notebook flips by in the bottom of the screen, showing off the original line of Robot Masters, Roll (002) and Rock (001). On the last page we see that his words are true - there's Protoman, Number 000.

Then you get to face down Wily, now using Gamma as his personal war machine. The first form is vulnerable to Hard Knuckles or Shadow Blades (though you may need to use Rush for the latter), while the latter is vulnerable to Search Snakes, which are a pain to hit with.

The first Wily fight is this weird... Crab? Thing with giant pins for legs. The turret is vulnerable to Spark Shocks, and then once the dome is exposed, shoot at it with the Hard Knuckle.

Soon Wily surrenders... Or not. It's a decoy, tee hee.

Wily's also built another fortress while you were busy. He may not ever have succeeded in conquering the world but he could have made a killing in the construction business.

You fight him again (in Hard Man's level of all places) but he's not any tougher that time either.

And then you finally return home to find that it was all a setup and Dr. Wily has absconded with Gamma. What a twist!

Once all four stages are cleared again the center panel changes and we confront "Break Man"; our old friend again, now wearing a mask with one glowing eye for no readily apparent reason.

There are unused animation frames of him transforming to wear it, interestingly enough.

You'd think that'd be it, but once you've cleared all eight bosses four of the select screen icons light up again, all with the portrait of another robot you've never seen before.

This is Doc Robot, whose gimmick is mimicking the attack patterns (and weapons) of all of Mega Man 2's Robot Masters!

Needle Man's level definitely fits his theme, with porcupine enemies and spikes that extend down from the ceiling to get you (thankfully not an instant kill, but they hurt).

Needle Man is also quite tough, launching barrages of needles and smacking you with the spikes on his head for heavy damage.

Gemini Man, as his name implies, splits into two targets, who both run around the room at high speed, only firing when you shoot at them first. Once they get below half health one of them vanishes and the other changes things up, slowly walking around while firing bouncing beams.
November 13, 2025 at 7:17 PM
Our old friend shows up again to open up the way below. He doesn't fight you this time; just silently stares for a few seconds before teleporting away and blowing open the hatch.
November 13, 2025 at 7:17 PM
After those five are defeated you're into the second loop; none of your acquired weapons are all that effective against the last three Robot Masters, so you basically have to start fresh.

I usually go for Snake Man first since he's fairly easy to beat. Plus his level's snake-themed and fun.

Hard Knuckle is a pretty goofy weapon; it fires off a fist-shaped projectile that explodes on inmpact, and can be steered up or down.

It's not actually Mega Man firing a rocket punch at an enemy though. That would't happen until the fifth Game Boy game!
November 13, 2025 at 7:03 PM
Hard Man fires out fist-shaped projectiles that ricochet, as well as leaping into the air and landing on you headfirst. That does massive damage (and the game pauses to highlight the impact), so definitely avoid that.

Magnet missiles catch him easily in midair though.
November 13, 2025 at 7:03 PM
Magnet Man floats above you and rains magnet missiles down, then magnetizes himself and tries to pull you in, which does pretty hefty damage.
November 13, 2025 at 7:03 PM
Spark Man is another pretty predictable fight, hopping about the room and tossing small spark balls your way, occasionally generating a larger (and much more damaging) one. Shadow Blades take him down really fast though.
November 13, 2025 at 6:30 PM
Shadow Man is a tough boss; ridiculously fast and aggressive, tossing out shurikens and sliding straight into you for heavy damage. I don't think I've ever seen anyone defeat him without special weapons or E-tanks.

Humorously he also dies really fast to the otherwise mostly-useless Top Spin.
November 13, 2025 at 4:38 PM
Shadow Man's stage is next; you'd expect something kind of ninja-themed but it's mostly an industrial stage with a lot of instant-kill hazards and robots who blot the level in darkness.

It's also your first encounter with this mysterious character.
November 13, 2025 at 4:33 PM
Top Man has a pretty simple pattern; you can just slide under the tops he throws then jump him as he spins to the other side of the room. You can't harm him with anything while he's spinning, though.

Defeating him earns you the Top Spin; definitely one of the franchise's weirdest weapons.

The soundtrack in general is very solid, per series norm. Harumi Fujita composed a few tracks but the majority was done by Yasuaki Fujita. He would also compose the soundtrack for one of my favorite SNES RPGs, Breath of Fire.

Mega Man 3 is somewhat unique among the series in that there's actually two separate 'routes' through the boss rotation; five bosses are done in the usual pattern of collecting one's weapon and using it against the next, then the last three have their own rotation.
