The building is like a thousand others in the Chicago interior: arranged out of lumpy salmon brick molded from Lake Michigan clay, slapped together post-fire to cover the ruins of a block turned to ash. I doubt anyone expected something so cheap to last into the next century, but if we're known for anything here, it's stubbornness.

Or at least, it made it into a thing she was supposed to laugh at. Kristen considered it a major failure of early childhood education that students were encouraged to learn the difference between laughing with and laughing at, without ever learning about laughing for, or how often in life they would be asked to laugh for someone else.)

This was peace. Vacation. Here, now, while the rest of them were sightseeing. It seemed to Anna that the concept of "vacation" was antithetical to the concept of "family." Vacation required vacancy. The abandonment of all scraps of everyday life.

“No, that’s not. That’s not what I meant.” I stumbled over the words. “I just, I’m afraid. My last ex was. Is. She. We fell into a really bad rut for a long time. I don’t want to do that again, but I’m not sure how to avoid it.” Jaime was silent for several long minutes. His arms were still around me but they had gone limp, and I could feel him withdrawing. “Every relationship is different,” he finally said. “We don’t have to repeat our mistakes.” I shook my head slightly. “Every relationship is different, yes, but I’m still the same me,” I told him. “I don’t know if I know how to tell when it’s time to walk away. I don’t trust myself.” “If you walk away before things even begin, will you ever learn that?” His voice was quiet and a little sad. I felt myself drawn in by his vulnerability and repulsed by it at the same time. I leaned into him and felt his arms tighten around me in response. “You have a point,” I said softly. “I guess I’m most afraid of being the one people are leaning on, only to have them withdraw when I finally need something from them.” “You’re leaning on me right now,” he said, and I laughed.

This part!!! The number of times I've heard T1s as having the "good type" as if we T2s brought this on ourselves with bad behavior.

The primary factors for T2 are: genetics, economic indicators of health, childhood trauma, eating disorders, and chronic stress. I sure brought this on myself huh

And so for the type one community to be exclusive, in this moment, in this grand opportunity for all of us to celebrate together, really sort of broke me down in a way, you know, I was like, Why? Why can't we just keep this open? Why can't we make this a win for everyone? Instead of saying, quote, unquote, type two people don't use these devices? And I think that the reason why it was like it was like a jab in my heart is I think that that claiming does something in society, right? It, it functions to show us that large groups of the diabetes are the type one community feel like, maybe type two diabetics aren't using that technology, because they're the ones who don't care. And they're the ones that the stereotype is about. And so that shows me that we have pockets in our type one community that buy into the stereotype just like the public does.

So often in media (maybe especially horror and thrillers) they get diabetes very wrong, and it's obviously being utilized as a device to accelerate the plot/motivate characters. And they treat insulin as if it does the opposite and highs as if they were lows. Crafting for Sinners gets it right 💕
Ruth was constantly battling her blood sugar, especially when funds ran low and she had to ration her insulin--then her blood sugar would hover too high, and she'd drop weight rapidly. She'd become an expert at dosing, at rationing, at knowing the smallest amount she could inject without going into ketoacidosis and having to trek to the ER. High blood sugar wouldn't kill her—at least not imminently, not like the lows, She lived by the adage, the phrase drilled into her head by every doctor since diagnosis: better to be high than low. But sometimes she pushed it too far, even if out of necessity.

There used to be an internet meme about the ordeal of being known, or something like that. But Jamie has always believed the truest joy in life is when someone else holds in their hands a relief map to all your most errant nonsense. Money is fake, fame is bullshit, but intimacy is bloody treasure.

I think about this a lot (from Lessons in Magic and Disaster by Charlie Jane Anders)
We so often talk about "chosen family" as if it's the lack of choice that's the problem. Maybe instead of trying to replicate familial structures, especially that of the nuclear family, we could find something new, a paradigm that allows us to cherish each other without staking any claims-something with room for more people, and many types of relationships at play.

Ugh, annoyingly relatable (Charlie Jane Anders' Lessons in Magic and Disaster)
Perhaps the downside of being a witch is too much awareness of your own feelings. You spend so much time trying to sink to the bottom of your own emotional lagoon so you can dredge up one honest want, that you stop being able to hide your feelings from yourself. This is annoyingly therapeutic, and it's ruined Jamie for Jacobean theater and Romantic poetry. Whenever Jamie experiences a strong emotion, she's the first to know, which never used to be the case. And most of the time, Jamie has to act on it.
