Why can't we be like UWy and have a pasture outside my office to ride the horses into work? I mean the UC totally only enables some silliness and not other forms.

From what I can tell the creeping path is

Human geneticists say important.

Plant geneticists want NIH money so start agreeing and saying in papers.

Young researchers read new plant papers and think is real as don’t know pre-existing lit.

Idea is now “real” and expands.

I love how human genetics created an idea that longer established quant gen systems knew as an illusion. Then ignored those systems to the point the other systems questioned themselves. Only now for the human geneticists to say it was an illusion.

I wonder if there are other more recent examples?

Is that the last Chappelite?

I was wondering if the experimental design should shift if the desire is to say "Yes, there is a diff" vs "No, there is no diff". Using the Yes experimental for the No statement seems to risk a high false error rate.

Arabidopsis work on glucosinolates gave rise to a lot of the synthetic biology work on glucosinolates from Pairwise Genetics and other companies. Too many genes to count.

Sounds like the standard Econ to Ag Econ relationship.

We are finding coexpressed clusters in our favorite fungus that have enzymes in them but seem more catabolic or detox in nature. Was wondering if others find that.
November 14, 2025 at 7:01 PM
Bacteria it is most catabolism and anabolism the cluster, plants seems to be only a few biosynthetic pathways. Less clear where fungi lay on that spectrum. Wondering how many clusters AntiSmash misses in fungi. #secmet

Is there much evidence in fungi of clusters being something other than specialized metabolite synthesis?

My favorite is this esoteric gene lets us suggest our solid assumptions about specialized metabolism evolution may not be so solid.

What if distal gene duplications are most important?
What if synteny based orthology misleads greatly?
What if genes loss is rapid, rampant and independent?

I think they are actually driving through one of those Christmas light places and calling it an aurora.

My parents keep sending this from Iowa to say we should move back and leave a California winter.

Although to be clear, humility and ego coexist in all of us. That is part the of being human. It is simply can we acknowledge our ego and its existence. Pure humility is simply a thing of the saints and sages.

Totally agree, they get three practice exams that are built to reinforce and slightly extend the lecture. Have access to them all quarter.

I go further and say

Life in other planets could follow Mendel and never new DNA.

Use the height gene to discuss how large and small effect can coexist.

Walk them from one additive gene to two to three to 1000s to show how quant arises.

I wonder how many students ever get that message.
November 8, 2025 at 12:56 PM
I hope those ideas land with half the audience as they often come in with different ideas from previous classes so working to change rather than fill in a blank slate.
