James is chin-stroking about the end of democracy here, and I’d point out that the key issue for almost two decades has been a political/media class increasingly making it very clear they will choose actual Norsefire fascism over any kind of backsliding on Thatcherism, if pushed archive.ph/qBzgr

So according to NPR drought is playing a role in this. I've always felt that one of the first ways ordinary Americans would notice climate change would be when a Quarter Pounder is fifteen bucks.
Tyson Foods, the American meat industry titan, said on Friday that it would close down a major beef processing plant in Nebraska, as the U.S. faces high beef prices and its lowest cattle inventory in decades.

The processing plant, in Lexington, employs more than 3,000 workers. It is expected to close in January.

Just heard re: some ICE agents who raided a Chicago taqueria, then went back to the same taqueria for lunch the following week and got confused when the owner kicked them out, and I realized "jesus these doofuses really do believe we're all living in a video game where the NPCs have no memory"

People need to remember that a lot of AI tech bros are huge fans of Trump, MAGA, and are pedophiles themselves. Please don't use their product, if at all possible. Learning a couple tricks in MS Paint will get you pretty far to creating your silly memes. Also handy:

if democrats won't even stand up for their shitty health care scheme to enrich every corporate member of HIPAA, why should we care if it goes away? especially if it goes away because we all get free health care instead?

AI is simply a scheme to make sure we burn all the proven reserves of fossil fuels, climate be damned. The only certain effect AI will have from an economic perspective is propping up the asset value of those reserves. Everything else is pie-in-the-sky and the finance people know it.
"In an internal memo from September, CEO Sam Altman said that OpenAI’s “audacious long-term goal is to build 250 gigawatts of capacity by 2033.” If Altman achieves this goal, OpenAI will need almost exactly as much electricity as India’s 1.5 billion people"

along with more bad things.

he's right. if you need to make 11% return there's no way to build affordable housing. this is accurate. you can have for-profit housing, or housing people can actually afford to live in.

thanks for making it clear how the imperatives of capital are incompatible with meeting people's needs.

There are two main ways to define centrism: the consensus among those who spend the most on elections, and the consensus of those who are eligible to vote in elections.

The Acela corridor media will always reflect the former, but what wins elections in more places is the latter.
🎧LEVER TIME: How voters forced Dems to reject their corporate-coddling political & media elites & learn that populism is centrism.

Election 2025 was a rejection of the oligarch orthodoxy enforced by Democratic leaders & corporate media.

Why Populism Is Now Centrism
Democratic strategists say the party needs to move to the center. This week’s election winners found it — but not where the party was looking.

At the risk of sounding petty, calls for Democratic unity going forward are all well and good, but let’s not forget that the reason Cuomo ran against Mamdani in the first place was a last-ditch effort by the New York Democratic Party to ratfuck their duly elected nominee.
