A slice of city life… nowadays its mainly about birds.
Today there are two Evening Grosbecks visiting Prospect Park. Ravens, Crows and a Peregrine Falcon all flew by to say “Hi”.

Late afternoon light in the winter is awful. I was left wondering which bird lost its battle with that hawk. So I walked over and found its feathers.

RIP Mourning Dove.

So that woodpecker was right. I looked around and saw this Red-tailed Hawk right after it caught dinner. Look at those feathers fly!

I hadn’t realized it yet but this Red-bellied Woodpecker knew - there is a hungry Red-tailed Hawk in the area.

One of the differences between a duck and goose is the number of bones that make up their neck. A goose can have up to seven more bones in their neck.

These Brants are geese. They kindly watched the car while we went birding.

Are 44 Buffleheads a large flock?
The Internet says: Less sociable than most ducks, seen in pairs or small groups, almost never in large flocks.

A quiet birding day often brings an opportunity to observe species behavior. This Red-breasted Nuthatch forages for food by the base of a tree trunk.

Forgive the graininess of this video. We located this American Woodcock from a distance and we took care not to get close and have it fly away.

Here is a juvenile American Oystercatcher finding its way south during fall migration. The eyes are still dark and the adults have slightly longer necks.

Buffleheads are small diving ducks. Their name comes from the male’s “Buffalo like” puffy large head.

At this time of year Bumble (Prospect Park’s the leucistic squirrel) is usually holding some treasured food item and is sprinting off to bury it.

The moon glistens as the sun sets at 4:50pm.
Green-wood closes at 6pm.
So its quiet and darkness seeps in.

Saw two bats, a Great Blue Heron hunting for fish and a Red-tailed Hawk, well, just hunting.

I’m getting better at spotting birds from a distance. Good thing I captured this Cooper’s Hawk, once I got closer it flew off.

We have a guest from the West Coast, a stunning Varied Thrush. Bright orange with a black face mask. Bounced around all afternoon, eating to get enough strength for its return trip home.
