4/ We map the UN energy balances to the same format as the I/O data to estimate emissions from combustion.

Then we allocate the EDGAR emissions inventory data to the
same I/O data format to include non-combustion emissions, like those from agriculture and industrial processes.

3/ We don’t use proxies. Instead, we have a detailed model to estimate this emissions data, using other available data to construct the emissions.

The UN and EU both have freely available authoritative data that we use, including the UN's energy balances and the EU's EDGAR emissions inventory.

2/ We've focused on our estimates. Estimates are needed in all MRIO models, for countries that don’t publish their sector emissions.

Differences in these estimates is one of the biggest reasons why different MRIO models can produce very different results.

3/ We've also seen basic errors in carbon accounts, even in those that have already been audited.

DeSmog rightly point out the vested interests and lack of wider sustainability knowledge in the big auditors.

We also need to question their detailed knowledge of carbon numbers.

2/ It shows which industries give a ‘good bang for their buck’ in terms of their direct emissions relative to their economic contribution.
It doesn't work for individual corporate accounting.

1/ Examples of companies using datasets for carbon accounting, which aren't designed for this use - like the ONS Atmospheric emissions: greenhouse gas emissions intensity by industry.

This data gives direct emissions (Scope 1 only) per unit of gross value added for different UK industries.

This first Carbon Impact Report provides producer members (electronics manufacturers) with quantified data on net carbon savings from their 2024 recycling activities.

Downstream Scope 3 requires different calculations and we’re proud of our ground breaking work together in this area.
