Last week, our Director Mark Downes took part in a panel discussion on challenges, threats, and trends in illicit weapons trafficking in Ukraine, at the 3rd Nat’l Conf. on Preventing and Combating Trafficking & Illegal Circulation of Weapons, Ammunition and Explosives in Ukraine.

Firearms trafficking from the US to the Caribbean is often referred to as 'ant trade', but the term does not do justice to the scope and scale of some trafficking operations.

The smugglers reportedly told authorities that this was their 13 delivery of illicit firearms that they'd undertaken.

Last week, US border agents discovered more than 300 firearms in a single illegal shipment interdicted at the US- Mexico. The firearms were packed floor to ceiling behind false walls in two towed utility trailers (see photos below).

The seizures are the latest in a long list of large caches recovered by Syrian authorities since the fall of the Assad regime. These weapons pose an acute threat to Syrians, their neighbours and, depending on the reach of trafficking networks, potentially other parts of the world.

The cache in Daraa was found in a private home and had been ‘stolen from military barracks following the fall of the regime.’ All of the weapons were reportedly going to be trafficked, and the caches in western Damascus were to be trafficked abroad.

Over the past 24 hours, the #Syrian government posted photos of at least two massive caches of #arms and #ammunition seized in western Damascus and in the Daraa countryside. The caches contained hundreds of projected grenades, RPG-7 pattern rounds, and dozens of containers of firearms ammunition.
