The burden of heart failure continues to rise in the U.S. with some notable shifts in risk factors, based on registry data. The analysis also suggests that ischemic drivers of HF may be less significant compared to what they were 35 years ago. www.tctmd.com/news/rising-...
Rising HF Burden in the US Potentially Related to Changes in Cardiometabolic Factors
An analysis, though based on self-reported data, hints that ischemic drivers of HF carry less clout than they did 35 years ago.

I missed this from a couple of weeks ago, but if you're an NIH-funded investigator, please read.

Peer review will exist to make things look legitimate, but can, and will, be over-ruled. Funding decisions, ultimately, will be done by political appointees.

AI is Destroying the University and Learning Itself

Image screening is going to fail. We need audit trails for data provenance.
I tried an even harder example on Gemini Pro image generation and this is quite scary/amazing. I asked for a microscopy image of around 20 HeLa cells, GFP tagged 20% nuclear, 10% membrane, +1 nuclear staining, + overlap. Image below and prompt in the following post.

Another new policy from the geniuses in NIH leadership.

Apparently, ~70% of grant applications for most mechanisms will not be "triaged", i.e. not discussed at study section.

This is an increase from the ~50% level that has been in place for many years.

I don't know the rationale for this

I posted yesterday about the shift to triaging 70% of NIH applications rather than 50%.

This is apparently just a temporary step to catch up for all of the study section meetings cancelled due to the government shutdown.

I hope NIH will collect some data to track the impacts of this change.
