We strongly disapprove and discourage the breeding of zonkeys, as you often you end up with a confused, angry, unhandleable animal which is so unfair to them. Many of these hybrids end up in bad situations due to the wildness of their zebra side. They do not make good pets.

Zonkeys can be incredibly wild and hard to handle, as we know from experience. They often need to be treated similarly to wild horses using chutes for trimming and vetting. Our other zonkeys have wonderful wild lives running free up in Oregon, as Zee will do after his feet have healed.

No matter how well horses are cared for, their gastrointestinal tracts are what they are. It’s terrifying when it strikes.

Chesney glowed a radiant orange in the evening sun, like the autumn leaves at the time of year he left us. At the 1st sign of colic, we took him straight to the vet clinic, where they treated him until he passed. When we visited him, we sensed that we were saying goodbye to this beautiful being.

Chesney liked to graze green grasses on the hills, especially after the rain. He had a special place in his heart for Boots, a naughty mini-mule, even after he knocked Chesney off his warm rolling sand to roll in it himself:
