Being upset by awkward enthusiasm but not upset about overt sexism and racism, blatant corruption, or brazen authoritarianism, both seem like manifestations of how superficially we judge public figures. e.g. gsb-faculty.stanford.edu/katherine-ca... 2/2

Oddly, that strikes me as less an example of how much higher standards used to be (though they certainly were), but rather an example of how consistently emotional and irrational our judgments of politicians are. 1/2
